I think I have a different solution. You might want to try this if the given solution doesn't work. :)

Have you asked Johnny about borrowing the metal detector? If not, make sure you've read the book about El Toro in the resort lobby; I think that triggers the conversation.

Once you talk to him, he'll agree to let you borrow the metal detector if you get back his compass. You can retrieve it by

playing a game with the monkey with the notched-ear.

Afterwards, return the compass. The detector won't automatically pop up in your inventory; you have to click on it. It's behind Johnny, slightly to the left of the screen.
