    .................................................. .MyCatTilly Presents,
    What I Really Thought:

    The Curse of
    Blackco_r eagr

    Edition

    Plot

Nancy has been called to jolly ol’ England under some very odd circumstances. Linda, a former resident of River Heights, has just married into the prestigious Penvellyn family. But all is not well in the centuries old mansion, now that Linda has isolated herself to her room and won’t come out from behind a curtain. Is she hiding from something? Is there really a beast of blackmoor? Can Nancy get to the bottom of this or will she become the next victim?

Ok, so maybe finding out why someone is hiding in their room doesn’t seem like it’d be all the exciting but trust me - it is. It’s a very spooky game, and I jump at certain parts every single time. There are a few gaps in the story, some of which can be filled in with informed assumptions but, others are just kind of lingering.

    It gets 8/10

    Graphics and Setting

I can’t even begin to fathom what happened here.

SHA looked pretty darn amazing but just one game later, CUR has back stepped all the way to STFD and MHM. The characters are once again lumpy with almost no variation in skin tone, and most have hard to define hair (ala CAR) Am I being harsh? Perhaps a little bit but, is it too much to ask for the people to express emotion? I thought we cured a lot of “blank-stare-syndrome” in TRT, and even fine tuned the faces at Shadow Ranch? It’s very disappointing.

On the flipside, the Manor is lovely, in a gaudy-licious sort of way.
The game is similar to TRT or MHM in that you’re confined to the one building, but luckily Blackmoor is massive so you won’t feel like you’re walking in circles.

    combined: 3.5/10

    Puzzles

If you like puzzles, you will not be disappointed. CUR has, by far, the most activities to keep you busy. Some are very easy and others are very hard. Ridiculously hard.
But if you keep a good attitude, even the trickiest challenges are fun.

    I give them 9/10

    Characters

My favorite character isn’t even human. That basically sums it up but I’ll elaborate.

The people are static, unoriginal and uninteresting. They’ll often tell you about sad or scary things but they never seem to be upset or afraid (probably has something to do with their crooked eyes and emotionless faces) The only exception is Linda, and you only see her shadow. Ok ok, I’ll stop poking fun at the graphics and voice actors.

There are also a few characters that I’m not even sure why they were there. Yes, they told you why they were at the manor but what I mean is; what did they add to the story? You could say that they were just another possible culprit but, they lacked motive. On top of that, one of the aforementioned characters only pops up a few times and you can’t just go talk to her whenever you want (like you can with every other main character in the entire series). I’m not a fan of that.

I’ll stop complaining and just give them 2.5/10

    Ending *Spoiler Free*

You’d think a challenging game would have a challenging ending but unfortunately, that’s not the case. I thought the culprit was a good choice but the actual game play, doesn’t make much sense.

    I give it 4/10

    Overall

I know that I’ve said some not-so-flattering things about the game, but it is pretty fun and I do think you should check it out. It’s, with out a doubt, the spookiest ND game. Also, it's a landmark, being the first game to take place outside of the US (although you don’t see anything outside of the manor)
On an unrelated note, if you are a wiccan or a christian, you might find parts of the game “offensive”
    Play at your own risk.

    Overall score: 7/10
    Creepiness (10 equals terrifying): 9/10
Difficulty (10 equals hair pulling): 8/10

    Should I buy this game?

There isn't a single ND game that I wouldn't recommend. If you end up not enjoying this game, don't let that stop you from trying others in the series. There is a ton of variety.

    Happy Gaming!

Thank you but I'm not sure I understand what you're getting at? My main gripe was with the graphics.

        Me 2

Yeah I didn't think the graphics were as good as some of the graphics in the other games, even some of the games before it, but that's not the point. The point is that this game is scary. Really scary. Actually, it's the only Nancy Drew game I've played that I've thought was remotely scary at all. Her Interatcive needs to stick to more happy-go-lucky themes. Even though they're mysteries, I'm not a big fan of anything that scares me too much.
Team Edward because while he may not be the strongest, he's strong enough to kill you. Plus he wins in the end. Rooting for Jacob is like rooting for the Lions.

Jesus loves you, He's given you everything. What will you give back?

i liked you review, but i felt the game deserved a 10/10. i mean it was a pretty amazing game, it was actually fantastic! [not yelling] i thought the characters were very memorable though. but you are right about not getting mad at the hard puzzles and you'll find yourself liking them. i actually started to like the wind puzzle! crazy i know!

come on!! this game was awesome, but they probably spent so much time giving us a beautiful manor, that HER didn't have time make the characters look amazing. the way the characters look really shouldn't effect what you thought of the game play. but whatever, you have your opinion and i have mine.......

I am a follower of MyCatTilly's reviews and I think that they're writing and editing skills are great. I noticed though that you neglected to write about all the suspense in this game- I thought that that was a big part of it.

I'm afraid we're going to have to agree to disagree, IceChick. I have to mention that in every video game company that I know of, the backgrounds and the characters are done by completely different people so you really can't say that they were too busy. And when you have SHA as an example that both can look amazing at the same time, there really was no excuse for the low quality characters.

I don't think the graphics affected my opinion of the gameplay. I really liked the gameplay with the ending being my only exception.

But just like you said, you have your opinion and I have mine. And like it says in my sig, I rant because I care

Why would a Christian find some parts offensive? If the ghosts and all that kind of thing always turn out to be false and there's always a human culprit.
Just solved my first dossier! Summer break and I'm on an ND roll :)

There are some unexplained spooky occurrences, curses, witchcraft, and secret rituals.

Its not that someone would get offended, it's that they might be offended. It's something that has never made any sense to me personally, but I've seen people complain about the sorts of things listed above.

I'm Wiccan and I still don't find this game offensive, so it's a game that you just gotta be tolerant. So I like how you put that warning in there. (: I agree. The characters were kinda lumpy but overall I think they were okay. I liked Linda's shadow. So I disagree with you there. But overall I like your review. :D And it's too the point. Whoo!

I haven't finished this game all the way yet, but I'm close. And your review makes me want to end it even more to see the culprit. XD
Also, I appreciate your warning to Christians/Wiccans on the possibly offensive gameplay. I am a Christian and don't find these things offensive because HeR shows them as bad, but I still like the note, since some will find it offensive.
                            Thanks for the awesome review!
