  • My LIE review

Personally I hated this game. I had high hopes for it as I am a amateur scholar of mythology, but this game is just sad. I think it could've been great, like Phantom of Venice or Ghost of Thorton Hall, but you guys just dropped the ball.

There is no intro to why you are there, no backstory, just a phone call that explains about as much as a plot to an early computer game on a floppy disk. Because of that I felt disconnected. I felt nothing for the plot, nothing for the characters, and the puzzles felt tedious and annoying. I wanted to see this game shine. I wanted to travel around Greece, absorb the sights like Venice. Nancy doesn't have a place to stay as we can see it. I'm sorry her interactive, but you fumbled this and lost the game. I'll stick around as I have been a fan since the first game, but shape up or your losing me.

    I know, right?

I thought against my better judgement and bought the game because I couldn't resist. Unfortunately I agree with you, the game was so boring I couldn't be bothered to finish it and I ended up reading the walk through to see what happened, and even that was dull! I agree that there needs to be an introduction to the game (especially for people who haven't played before) so there is some sort of grounding. It was a shame that the mystery was blatant from the beginning rather than slowly unfolding throughout the game like the classic games. The characters were not fun to talk to either, not just because of their vague dialogue but because they had no personality. I miss the older characters like Hotchkiss and Rick Arlen who were so funny to talk to.

The puzzles were incredibly tedious and they are usually my favourite part of the game! It was impossible to do anything without encountering a puzzle, they were original yes, but not very purposeful. The games used to be very exciting; with an innocent vacation or internship gone awry, with colourful characters, with clues and detective work. Now they seem to be just puzzle games with a story. Even though they are just point-and-click games they used to be very clever to create, what felt like, a whole city or mansion to explore. In some ways I feel like someone else is making games under the name 'Nancy Drew' but I'm not actually buying a Nancy Drew game.

        Bring back the old Nancy

Agreed, I dont understand why people are saying that LIE was similar to the older games. It isn't at all, there is no depth and no sleuthing. And now that they already got rid of Lani, I feel like HeR just sadly doesn't care to go back to what made them so big in the first place. They are blinded by trying to become something new, when the truth is most long-time loyal fans miss the old Nancy.

While there were some elements of the game that I really enjoyed (the Hardy Boys, the characters, the setting), I felt throughout the entire game that there was something that was missing, that was off about the game. It was like I was waiting throughout the entire game for something to click into place and complete the plot, but it didn't. I agree with you completely on how there was no introduction to the game. Especially at the beginning, I was saying to myself, "Huh?" way too many times. There was a lack of beginning to the game - unlike GTH, where Nancy gets a phone call explaining what's going on, and the plot keeps building upon itself. With this game, I felt like the plot was getting buried under a lot of confusion.
But, Thornton Hall isn’t exactly a breath of fresh air.
The murky air and the shadows that followed only seemed to muddle my brain more.
The possibility that Clara’s death was not murder was starting to become more than a plain consideration.
<<.return home.>> is coming back to the alternate ending boards
            SEPTEMBER

(in the meanwhile, catch up on chapters 1-9 here)
            stay tuned... ;-)

Arrrrraaaaaaggggggg I wanted to love this game so badly

I love Greek mythology. I love it. So when I heard they were going to to a game about Greek mythology I was so pumped. But then I played the game.... uggg...
I definitely agree with people on the beginning. I was kind of vague. In the earlier games we know everything. We know exactly where we are we know exactly why were are there and who our contact is. But this game was just like... heeeeeey Nancy... you solve mysteries? Right? Well a bunch of artifacts are missing... and their either stolen or just... lost? We think? Also were putting on a play. But we don't have a lot of money. But we have a really complicated set for some reason ...Help???
I'm going to compare it to the game everyone else compares it to: Secret of the Scarlet Hand. In that game, Nancy tells us right off the bat- Hey dad! I got an internship at a museum. Here's everything you need to know about it. Then the conflict kicks in later. There's no play on the side, there's no vagueness to whether or not things are missing. We know what we are doing.
Another thing that confused me is how exactly the production team worked. There's only four people working on this play, and they're all actors. There is no crew. That means that the actors, along with memorizing lines, also have to do things back stage. I've been in crew. You need an army of people to put on any production. The set is beautiful, yet... very complicated. Again, you'd need a huge crew to deal with size and complexity of this set. I understand why HeR can't just write, animate and voice thirty people, but they should have tried to make the whole play little more realistic. Make the play more simple. Add some of that complexity to the museum.
Also I felt like the conclusions were drawn out. I can't go into them because spoilers, but Nancy might figure something out and instead of confronting or using that information, she just kind of... ignores it.
And when there is action or something surprising, we don't really understand that thing completely, even at the end of the game.
All the bad things aside, I really like the concept of the ending. Again, I can't spoil you, but the character dynamics were interesting. I just want to know more. More! I wish it was explained more thoroughly.
If I had to sum it up: Really pretty. Interesting premise and conclusion. Plot needed to be clearer though.
