  • Very Disappointing: A reveiw by Aimee

    Ransom of the Seven Ships
    My least favorite game.

    Plot: 3/10
When Bess wins a trip for 3 to
    the Bahamas, she invites
    Nancy and her cousin George
to go with her. Nancy is delayed
and has to be flown out a few
    days after Bess and George.
But when Nancy gets to the
    resort they're staying at, Bess
has been kidnapped! This is my
least favorite ND game. Let us
start with the plot. The plot
    could have worked out, but
didn't. And here are a few
    reasons why:
    Nancy's unrealistic behavior:
    Nancy's behavior is completly
    unrealistic in this game. If
    everyone remembers, in The
    Final Scene, Nancy is paniced
    and frantic when Maya is
    kidnapped. That is realistic
    behavior. In this game, Nancy
    acts nonchalont and un-worried
that her best friend has been
    kidnapped! I'd be screaming my
head off if my best friend had
    been kidnapped! I found
    Nancy's behavior to be totally
unrealistic and I just didn't like
    it.
Lots and lots... and lots and lots
    of puzzles!
    There were many puzzles.
    Many, many, MANY puzzles.
    Too many puzzles And they
were hard. I like puzzles. But
not these puzzles. I just.... ugh,
I just do NOT like these puzzles
    AT ALL.

    Characters: 2/10
There are only 4 characters in
this game, which is the least
    characters an ND game has
    ever had. There is George,
    Bess's cousin, who I didn't
    consider a suspect, Johnny
Rolle, a beach bum who is
making us fix all of his stuff
and find things for him, another
    part of Nancy's unrealistic
    behavior. I'd tell him "Hey!
Johnny! Fix your own GPS and
    find your own beacon because
    we're trying to save a girl's life
    here!" And then there was
    CouCou, granddaughter to
    LouLou, the talking parrot at
    Blackmoor Manor. This is also
    unrealistic. I mean COME ON!
    What are the odds? Wouldn't
    CouCou have been with LouLou
and the people that gave her to
    the Penvellyns? This just
    doesn't make much sense to
    me. And then the fourth
    character, Bess, who I hardly
    consiter a character, seeing as
how you only see her for a
while at the very end. The
    characters were.... ehh.

    Overall: 3/10
This game could have been a
big success, but wasn't. It was
okay, but I probably won't be
    playing it again.

Thanks for your honest review. Though it sounds like I enjoyed the game rather more than you did, you adeptly pointed out the biggest flaws in the game as far as I'm concerned. The lack of urgency was the main detractor for me. As you said, compared to FIN, RAN hardly feels like a kidnapping at all! The laid-back pacing threw off the entire feel of the game in that respect. I also would have liked more characters. HeR took a risk, and I'm not sure it entirely paid off.

But overall, I did enjoy the challenge, and the activities were fun for the most part.

I'm finding it to be one of the hardest games because there are so many difficult puzzles... I've replayed the game a couple times only to be stumped at the same puzzle each time. If the puzzles weren't as difficult, I would probably have enjoyed it a lot more.

You're review really hits it on the spot :)

Great review! I agree with you on most of the things. RAN was my least favorite on the games I played.

I agree 100%. I had such high hopes for RAN, it really could've been a great game if they had given Nancy a sense of urgency and fright. You'd think Bess was just a random stranger, not Nancy's best friend. (Even then, I still think Nancy would be concerned even for a complete stranger, and she'd do everything in her power to help find them.)

The puzzles were so frustrating. I had to leave the boards and turn to a walkthrough, which was very disappointing, but there was no other way I could've solved it! The game gave us few instructions or clues as to how to solve the mystery.

My main problem with the game was the fact that there was really only one suspect we could converse with, Johnny Rolle. Yes we could talk to George and CouCou, but of course George didn't do it, and neither could a parrot. My favorite part of the ND games is getting to know the characters, and this game was a total let-down in that respect.

I loved your review, it definitely is not worth only 3 stars, so don't let it get you down! I think this was a really wonderful review, and super honest too!
I thought the exact same thing, and this was one of my least favorite games!
Thank you for being brave enough to give your opinion, because that's what reviews are suppose to be about!
