....................MyCatTilly Presents,
Plot
Nancy has been called to Venice, Italy to help the Italian police uncover the truth behind a masked thief. Her detective skills are put to the test when she must go undercover and complete secret tasks, spy on suspects, snoop in places she doesn’t belong and infiltrate a dangerous crime ring.
Ok, so the plot is rather farfetched but it works. This is the first time we’ve gone undercover and had it actually feel like we were undercover. It’s a really unique storyline, and a really unique game overall (amongst the other ND games, anyway)
On the other hand I absolutely hate the opening. If you’ve played the game (or the demo) you know, that the game begins with you in the middle of snooping then something happens that sparks a flashback. I can respect HER’s effort to mix it up, I just hope they don’t do something like this again.
the plot gets 8/10

Graphics and Setting
The graphics look pretty good. The characters look nice, although they are still plagued by the blurriness that began in CLK but, it isn’t nearly as bad. Some of the backgrounds are gorgeous, others look very cut and paste.
The setting is great. We get to go to a lot of different places, although getting from place to place could be a chore.
combined: 7/10

Puzzles
There aren’t as many little puzzles in VEN as there are in the typical ND game, and I really appreciate that. Puzzles can be fun, but VEN spends most of it’s time on snooping, sleuthing and undercover work which is far more exciting and believable.
There is one activity that is just way too silly and takes away from the mood of the game.
There are multiple puzzles/activities that leave Nancy’s first person view. I said it before, and I’ll say it again: I don’t like third person in my ND games, thank you very much.
But overall, I give them 8/10

Characters
The characters in VEN are fantastic. They’re dimensional with back stories and amusing personalities. You uncover motives and evidence for each of them as the game progresses. That may sound kind of obvious but a few of the past games have missed that element.
HER upped the interaction level too, which was needed. Maybe they do listen? (Well, when I finally write my HAU review, I’m sure I’ll be saying the exact opposite)
9/10

Ending *Spoiler Free*
The ending was a let down. It wasn’t terrible, just more of a puzzle than something that required quick thinking. My all time favorite endings are DDI, FIN, SHA and GDML. I much prefer that kind of thinking and problem solving (along with that level of threat and excitement) and I don’t think I’m the only one.
I give it 4/10

Overall
There are some really great things about VEN. The characters, the increased amount of snooping and sleuthing, the great plot twists, and the undercover work. Yet, there’s something about it that just makes me feel disconnected from it. I suppose part of that comes from the third person sections, but I also think it comes from a lack of mood or theme. It sort of has the same vibe of DAN in that, it has no vibe.
But, simply put, it’s a good game.
Overall score: 7/10
Creepiness (10 equals terrifying): 2/10
Difficulty (10 equals hair pulling): 5/10
"Should I buy this game?"
There isn't a single ND game that I wouldn't recommend. If you end up not enjoying this game, don't let that stop you from trying others in the series. There is a ton of variety.
Happy Gaming!
