    .......................MyCatTilly Presents,
    What I Really Thought:

    Waverly....ِ..Academy

    Edition

    Plot
The valedictorian candidates at the prestigious Waverly Academy have been receiving threatening notes from someone calling themselves The Black Cat. What’s worse, if they ignore the notes, they suffer a serious “accident”. In a world of gossip and secrets, it’s up to you, as Nancy Drew, to go undercover and find the culprit before The Black Cat strikes again.

The story is interesting. It’s exciting and unique, with some excellent twists. The only way I think it could be improved, is to flesh it out some more.

But for the first time, you actually go undercover! As opposed to past games where you go undercover and then introduce yourself with “Hi, I’m Nancy Drew.” That’s worth a few bonus points alone ;)

    Graphics
I don’t feel like WAC looks as good as it could, but there was a much needed improvement from RAN. But maybe that’s just because there aren’t any bodies of water ;)

    Setting
You’re more or less confined to the school, sort of comparable to CUR in that sense. If I wanted to get nit-picky, it’s a bit small. But, I don’t feel it affects the integrity of the game.

One of my main issues with WAC, is that it feels like there was a lot left unexplored. Like, whole sections of rooms that you couldn’t check out. I understand not wanting to clutter the room with things that are irrelevant, but when the places you can go and see are so limited, it’s almost like a big arrow saying “Hey, there’s something you need over here, so pay attention.” One of the great things about the games is that you never know what is important, or how something will work its way into the story. That aspect was a lost, somewhat, in this game.

    Puzzles
I really enjoyed the puzzles in WAC. They were very creative and fun. And one of the best things about them, is that there weren’t too many. But if wanted to get nitpicky again, I could say that they were too easy.

BUT again we have a puzzle book scenario ala CRY and RAN. I didn’t mind it too much in this case, because there was still plenty to do outside of the book. But it still would’ve been nice to have seen them come up with something new.

    Characters
The girls at Waverly are pretty one dimensional, but it was nice to have so many truly involved characters for a change. Recently, it seems like there have been characters that, while they do have an important moment in the game, they aren’t an integral part of the story. (Lamont from CRY, or Antonio and Enrico from VEN are good examples.) But that certainly wasn’t the case here.

There is a decent amount of interaction, but it would’ve been nice to be able to talk to them more and see some sort of progression throughout the game. But this is by no means a bad cast.

    Ending *Spoiler Free*
I felt pretty unsatisfied by the ending. The choice of culprit(s) and their motivation was serviceable but not inspired. The gameplay itself wasn’t my idea of fun, but I do appreciate HER trying to add some excitement by raising the stakes. It is one of the better endings we’ve seen recently but, in my opinion, that isn’t saying much.

    Overall
I really do enjoy WAC. It restored my faith in the series after the RAN disaster. It was able to add in new twists but keep the spirit of the ND games.

My number one issue with the game is that it really could’ve used some filling out. More content, make it longer, let us get to know the characters more, give us more to explore and to do. As it stands, WAC has sort of a linear quality to it.

But that said, there was plenty to love about this game. I would definitely recommend it to anyone.

    Overall score: 7/10
    Creepiness (10 equals terrifying): 1/10
Difficulty (10 equals hair pulling): 3/10

    "Should I buy this game?"

There isn't a single ND game that I wouldn't recommend. If you end up not enjoying this game, don't let that stop you from trying others in the series. There is a ton of variety.

    Happy Gaming!

I've read all of your reviews and I love how detailed and well thought out they are. I agree with pretty much everything you said. I did feel like we should have been able to explore a little more. I didn't like being confined to such a small space especially since they have easily added at least one more room but anyway, I'm getting off track here. Great review. I can't wait for your next one. Reps for to you!

Hi, I was wondering if I could do the thing at the bottom of your review also. The thing with the creepiness: (10 equals terrifying) and Difficulty (10 equals hair pulling)
