Hint as to where to place the animal stars

I am looking for an explanation - not a spoiler - as to how to figure out where the stars go. I have all four stars, and the Poe book. I've read the list in the front. I'm still not sure exactly how they correlate.

Start with the earliest publication date; that would be the first hole. Keep putting the stories in order by publication until you get to the four stories you need to use.
