The pattern was too neat. Even a child could follow it. All it took was three steps...
1. The phone rings.
2. A mysterious voice on the other side.
3. An unsuspecting victim usually wake up with no recollection the last couple of hours or of how he/she got in the strange situation that they found themselves in.
A string of unrelated crimes have terrorized the world's financial capital, New York City. At each crime is a supposed criminal discovered dumbfounded at the scene of the crime. They all said that they had been in a dream that was a bit too realistic. Some woke up with too much cash that wasn't theirs--others with expensive jewelry that they didn't own--and yet others with smuggled priceless valuables. And it's causing the New York City Metropolitan Police headaches when all the apprehended thieves have no recollection of ever committing the deed. In fact, all of them have a giant blank where a normal day's memory should be.
What's interesting is that all of them remember the same last thing: a mysterious phone call in the dead of night. They all remember answering it. And they all remember a hypnotic voice telling them,
"I AM MYSTICO."
Even though the perpetrators have been caught, the chief sergeant of the NYPD knows something is terribly amiss. All of these people are people known for not ever hurting a fly, let alone committing these heinous crimes.
And all of them are known names on Wall Street. On top of that, a lot of money is flowing out of Wall Street and vanishing into thin air. With the money goes the assets: paintings disappearing into the night, famed jewels being spirited away, and company shares being bought by an anonymous person.
The only clue the police have is the name "Mystico"--and that has led to dead end after dead end.
Nancy Drew has been called back to New York City to help with the ongoing investigations. But Nancy Drew must be careful because recent uncovered evidence suggests that the next call that Mystico makes will be to her cellphone...
